Some BON use this interchangeably to mean, "order" or prescribe. The NP must have a DEA number in order to have this privilege.
Oh I see. Thanks. Cause if I google the definition nothing comes up.

Just wanted to point out that a DEA number is not needed to prescribe, unless the BON states that it is. DEA numbers are only for prescribing controlled substances. Ohio APRNs are very restricted in what controlled substances they can prescribe and many NPs choose not to have a DEA number.
While many pharmacies ask for a DEA number for reimbursement, it is actually frowned on by the DEA when used this way and is only needed if the Rx filled is for a controlled substance. A pharmacy cannot refuse to fill an Rx for say an antibiotic simply because the prescriber doesn't have a DEA number. In Ohio, I can prescribe and not have a DEA number.
I suppose this may be different state to state, but the federal government does not require a DEA number for non narcotic/controlled substance prescriptions.
Thanks, rninwch. I should have clarified. :)
