So I'm in an all staff meeting yesterday after school and as we are exiting, the front desk lady pulls me aside and frantically tells me she has a student who has been waiting for me for over 30 minutes while I've been in this meeting. Front desk lady tells me she put her in my office for a while and now she's in the conference room waiting for me to assess her.
I say "school is over, she is not required to be here.... has anyone called her parents for pick up?"
"Well....No."
smh.
I do not see students after school hours (unless, of course there is some dire emergency, but even in that case it is most likely going to be in the realm of athletics, who have their own protocols). And letting her sit in my locked office, alone, with cabinets full of meds and medical supplies... where is the common sense?
Oh, I forgot to say... I asked the student if she had called her mom to pick her up yet. The student told me she forgot her cell phone at home. She was sitting in the conference room directly in front of a phone. It took everything in my power not to roll my eyes out of my head.

the two front desk ladies were both staring at me like I was nuts. And today the principal mentioned that she told the front desk ladies to feel free to pull me out of any meeting for a child issue (um, totally inappropriate directive, but ok....). I pushed back and said "They or the student could have called the parents for pick up. School was over; she didn't need my permission to leave." I could tell the principal was annoyed that I pushed back, but c'mon now. This is an 8th grader, btw, so capable of communicating independently with her parents.

So....student stable, not in any respiratory distress?
Wow. Whelp... I *might* have run by that kid, but then again....if the student was stable and not in any respiratory distress, with nothing apparently broken....

No! She was just not feeling well AFTER SCHOOL (stayed after for a non-mandatory sports practice). She did have a low-grade fever (I took her temp so I would know what to tell mom - 101.0), so it's not like she was fabricating symptoms... but if the kid is not feeling well and school is over, what are we waiting for? LOL! Go home!
