Just got a job. ..tell me how it is

So I just got this job. I am a LPN for 8 days now.

1. In your opinion, how long should my orientation be.

2. Should I run the med pass by myself? or have the person orienting me close by? :prdnrs:

3. Treatments: just show me the cart and say get to it???? oh at at the last med pass??

4. Unit manager says I'm doing a great job. (who by the way never introduced herself to me nor did anyone else)

5. The CEO comes by and says he wants more people like me?

6. Show me once how to wrap leg wound, make me do it next time and then tell me I took too long and don't use so many supplies next time??? :thnkg:

so are they pulling my leg? Do they just want me to work there and not leave. Are they desperate?

Was everyone's orientation as sucky as mine? Or was mine the best?

I am so green to this profession and not used to going to work and not having it professional. The amount of whinnying and ditching one's responsibilities is something new to me.

1. In my city, a typical nursing home orientation for a new grad is 3 days. If you're an experienced nurse, the orientation often gets cut short to 1 or 2 days.

2. You should be able to accomplish a med pass alone after 8 days. However, feel free to request more time with another nurse if you feel unsafe.

3. As far as the treatments are concerned, perhaps you can request a few hours with the facility's treatment nurse if you're unsure. If your facility does not employ a treatment nurse, you might be forced to do the very best you can with the treatments.

4. Your unit manager says you're doing a great job because she does not want you to quit.

5. The CEO does not want you to quit. Employee turnover costs too much money.

6. Nursing homes must get the job done with minimal supplies. Don't take this personally.

Thanks! Guess nursing is a lot different than I thought it was going to be. Kinda sad if you ask me....

But.... guess I'll just make the best of it like you said...

I'm just out of school but wanted to be a nurse for a long time.

None of this is a surprize, at all. As Commuter stated, they do not want you to leave. If you are breathing and can show up, maybe last at least a year, they are happy.
