So, I just got accepted to nursing school and in my email it gives me all the info for orientation and such. It states that the first hour of our orientation is a critical thinking exam, has anyone else had this? I am freaking just a little because it is really unexpected, and it states nothing about the exam other than that it exists...

yup, we had this, it was Kaplan and didn't count towards anything. We then took it at the beginning of the last semester to see if/how our critical thinking improved

Usually its more like a pre-test. We did it for a few classes to assess our knowledge and critical thinking skills before and after. DON'T PANIC! All the ones I have taken do not count for points, but if you go into it and follow your gut when taking it and then go over the answer rationale if they do a review (some have some have not) it may get you more into the habit of thinking like a nurse. Thinking like a nurse is one of the harder things to adjust to. Sometimes there is only bad answers and you have to prioritize the least wrong one. Other times you have things that are completely right to choose from, but you have to prioritize which one is the most right (hint: which one should you do first if you only could pick one). Have a great 1st day and remember to breathe, nursing school can seem very overwhelming at times, but you can get through it.

this is probably for statistics only. They will probably compare it to other test results before graduation to show that you increased your critical thinking skills. The questions are things like "a plane crashes on the border of two states. Where do you bury the survivors?"
Hopefully, you do not bury any survivors :)

It is nothing to worry about. It is just to figure out where you are in your ability to think critically. It gives you questions like...If stick A is shorter than stick B and stick C is taller than stick A which stick is the tallest. (I made that up off the top of my head) but the questions are like that. It is usually a base line test, and you will take another one at the end of nursing school to see how much your critical thinking skills have improved.

I never took this, but I wouldn't worry. Like the PP, they're probably trying to get an estimate on critical thinking since that's a very important skill to have in the nursing field. no worries:)

For us, you couldn't fail it. It was basically similar to the TEAS test if you have taken it if I remember correctly.
Thank you all, I appreciate it. I was so excited to get my congratulations email, but when I saw that I was way to nervous! You all made me fee much better about it haha.
