Just got accepted into an LPN program! What can i do to prepare?

Published

I will be starting in March of 2010. I am excited but also very nervous. I was just wondering for those who are in a LPN program if there was any advie they can give me. Is there anything that I should/could do now to prepare or help me?

Congratulations!! That's so great that you're already thinking about this! Is Medical Terminology one of your required courses? It wasn't for me and I wish I had either taken it anyway or bought a book to read on my own or something. Then everything wouldn't have sounded so foreign going in!

Well do you have any children or do you work? I started in sept and have 2 kids and a part-time job. I say plan ahead if you do. Find back up care. As far as classes go medical term is important and refreash yourself in bio. Ohh and if you have problems in math you might want to sit down and play with that too, for Pharm. Just enjoy yourself and relax as much as possible because it does get hard and you will get stressed!

Definitely might be helpful to prepare ahead for drug dosage calculations. Many students at my school struggled with it because only a short time was spent teaching this.

Relax and enjoy your free time! Once you start school free time will become nonexistant.

Memorize your equivalents.. ie- 30cc = 1 ounce, 5cc = 1tsp, etc. Know your metric system and how to covert it, Learn your medical abbr. ie.- PRN = as needed, BID= twice per day, PO = Orally, etc.

You can find alot of websites that will give you list of these, and you will have to know all of them so if you learn them now it will save valuable time that you will need for studying other stuff like anatomy and nutrition and pharm....

Good Luck to you

Brush up on your math, that definitely is a huge struggle for me right now. dean vahns medical term tapes are really good. if you brush up on a&p i would get an A&P made incredibly easy book! Relax though it is going to be hard!
