Just curious - Age 35+ make it hard to find job?

I posted this question in Reply to another's post. But thought maybe I'd get more response if I post as a new thread. Rather than get into the lengthy post I previously made....I'll nutshell it here:

Any new RNs age range 35 and up have a hard time getting first RN job due to younger competition? I'm 31 and just starting NS in October. I keep doubting my decision to leave a decent-paying (45+) legal position to change careers into nursing. I really want to. Can't stand my job and there is no future, no real benefits, etc. But I can't help but wonder if it's too late for this?

I'm so excited about nursing school most of the time, but once in a while, I wonder if I'm being a dreamer and unrealistic in my goals.??? :stone

Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm in a similar boat, 36 yrs old leaving the engineering field [not a money driven move :o)], but I do not think age will be factor when I graduate from nursing school. I would actually think the healthcare industry would prefer mature individuals who have faced various and many difficulties in life, and have demonstrated an ability to hold down a job, raise a family, and fulfill academic responsibilities at the same time. Experience in life is important when dealing with people. Nursing is very much a multi-tasking career, so proven experience that demonstrates the ability to do so can only help you when looking for a nursing job.

I was offered 6 out of 6 positions interviewed for as a new grad at age 33. There are many people in your situation, and unlike other fields of work, age is of little relevance in nursing. As for your salary -- I live on the West Coast & make almost 50K with only 2 years nursing experience. I have a friend who graduated with me, also in her 30's, who makes 60K doing travel nursing & has excellent benefits (including a 2K/month housing allowance). Your ambitions are not at all unrealistic. Go for it!
