Joining Organizations and Associations

Hello everyone! I am a new psychiatric RN and I've got a broad question (or questions) to ask. What are the real world pros and cons of joining an organization? Obviously I don't want to join something only because I can get something out of it without giving back, but I am still a current student and my time and money is somewhat precious at the moment. A coworker asked me to consider joining the APNA, and I found that a lot of the posts on that association are somewhat dated or not elaborated on. Is this something that a NP would benefit more from? Is there a hierarchy of organizations or associations I should know about? Is there one you could recommend over another? Maybe a more broad group instead of a specialized one? Any thoughts you could share would be greatly appreciated.

I can only refer to my own experiences. I have been an ANA/TxNA member for a very long time. I am also a member of ANPD. For many years, I was a member of AACN (critical care). I enjoy participating in professional associations because they give me a voice. These groups are the ones that establish practice standards. ANA is 'our' political lobby. I would rather take part in shaping our professional future than simply trying to cope with change as it happens.

So you've had positive experiences as a member of ANA? Thanks.
