University of Michigan Flint
Whew! That's such a load off my mind! I don't mind hard work, but I have some severe anxiety regarding pharm so that really helped me hearing that. I've noticed most of the undergrad professors are great there, and I'm glad it's no different for the DNP.

Well for my own sake of mind, I hope that one class wasn't pharmacology...

Feel dumb?
I'm right there with you. I went to UoM-Flint for my BSN, and was accepted into the DNP program and am scared out of my mind. This Fall is going to make or break me!

I just got accepted to the DNP program and start in the Fall. Hopefully you're kicking it's butt.

Joining Organizations and Associations
So you've had positive experiences as a member of ANA? Thanks.

Joining Organizations and Associations
Hello everyone! I am a new psychiatric RN and I've got a broad question (or questions) to ask. What are the real world pros and cons of joining an organization? Obviously I don't want to join something only because I can get something out of it without giving back, but I am still a current student and my time and money is somewhat precious at the moment. A coworker asked me to consider joining the APNA, and I found that a lot of the posts on that association are somewhat dated or not elaborated on. Is this something that a NP would benefit more from? Is there a hierarchy of organizations or associations I should know about? Is there one you could recommend over another? Maybe a more broad group instead of a specialized one? Any thoughts you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Nothing wrong with that.

Male Nurse Interactions
I didn't mean to open this can of worms at all, I was just looking for advice on what to do if someone doesn't want me as their nurse due to my sex. I think a lot of you offered helpful advice and many of you made excellent points. Even if people are bigoted or racist or sexist, ultimately it's their right to have someone else provide care if at all possible. Not to say someone who is being modest is being bigoted or sexist, as each persons morals and ethics are shaped by their culture and ethnic background. Ultimately we adhere to many separations still (male/female bathrooms, locker rooms, etc).

Male Nurse Interactions
I didn't think about it before, but I wonder if the nurses behavior made the patient reluctant to have me there.

Male Nurse Interactions
Yeah she was very disrespectful and belligerent to me in front of the patient. I think my instructor handled it as best she could. My school wanted to keep that specific clinical site so they probably didn't want to step on toes. I remember having a meeting about it (just us students and the instructor) and talking about how some nurses are discriminatory and it's just a fact of life. Granted I have no strong desire to be an OB nurse, but that doesn't mean I have to be an ER nurse like everyone says I should be because I'm a guy.

Male Nurse Interactions
Hah yeah I've had some great experiences with patients and some not so great. I don't think this lady was a bigot so much as embarrassed being exposed to a unnecessary male like someone else brought up. I only wish I could have been assigned to someone else 10 hours earlier so I would have possibly had the opportunity to witness one. but I do agree bigots are out there. I would think the female OB nurse who didn't think I belonged on the floor was discriminatory.

Male Nurse Interactions
There were no med students in the room at the time, and I'm not sure you understood what I was asking. I wasn't complaining or demanding anything, just looking for suggestions from experienced nurses for when situations come up like that. I am a RN and also happen to be a student, I was using that particular OB example for a foundation of what to do if faced with situations like that. I don't really care about the doctor/nurse respect issue as they both have two completely different job roles.

Male Nurse Interactions
Yikes! I think sometimes people forget that actual human beings with feelings and emotions are being cared for instead of a car with faulty brakes.

Male Nurse Interactions
At first I didn't care about what other people think of me, as I would never say anything that someone would consider unprofessional or unethical... But further thinking about it made me realize thats actually a really really good suggestion. I don't plan on ever discussing something that a future employer or colleague would find offensive, and causing me to get fired, but I suppose thats naivety on my part. After all everyone who gets married doesn't plan on getting a divorce. Staying anonymous has benefits. Thank you for the sound advice as I have both changed my avatar and username.

I can't smell c-diff
I can smell it, but it doesn't seem as horrendous as everyone makes it out to be.
