Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hello Maryland nurses :)

I'm from the Boston area, graduating with my ADN in May. I applied for the JHH clinical nurse residency program and I just got contacted for an interview! I don't know when it will be yet but I'm very excited. I'm not sure if DH and I will be able to relocate, but even the chance to interview with them is an amazing opportunity. Has anyone interviewed there and have any tips? Is anyone in the program currently? I requested the general medicine as my first choice, and critical care and surgery as my secondary choices. The job market is really tough up in the Boston area so I hope something pans out in Baltimore. Everything I've read says the Hopkins name really opens doors for you!

Thank you for the story! I'm from Florida and I have some family up in Maryland, but it will be big change for me if I get the position. I'm from a really small relatively new program too so this would be huge for my university. I'm still in awe that I even got an interview esp since some other hospitals won't even look at you if you are not from their home state. Still crossing my fingers and praying! As much as a I love Florida, I am ready for a change!

Just wanted to share with all of you. I graduated back in 5/88 from FL CC,and on spring break I went to JHH for interview.. It was the first year they were hiring new grads into High Risk L&D.. and back then the med-surg for one yr was really a unwritten rule, so Dean of my CC was amazed I even got interview.. I had worked as a intern while in final yr of nursing (ADN.) in newborn nursery (paid position). I also had 3.85 GPA and letters of recomendation from every teacher. But my CC instructors and Dean thought they would be consoling me after spring break..

But I was offered the position on the spot! I was only one of 4 offered a position and only one with ADN. I was the poster child for CC for a long time.:D

I was originally from MD so moving back was not difficult, (husband and 3 kids). Program consisted of intensive orientation that was awesome. I even got relocation $$... of course now this was yrs ago...

It was the smartest decision I ever made. JHH on my resume has gotten me interviews and jobs for 20 years. I only stayed a yr and moved back to FL as my extended family was there.

My only mistake was in going to work for community hospital in FL.. JHH was 20 yrs ahead of them and it ended up after 18 months I decided I was so uncomfortable and there were no teaching hospitals any where near me.. so I got a job in home health.. missed L&D alot and still do.. but HH was a great choice for me.

Yes JHH was awesome, and yes it was priceless on my resume.. So if you get an offer there I would recommend taking it.. By the way, the year after I was hired they decided it worked so well they hired 17 new grads!

I am sure things have changed alot and not all units are the same but I just wanted to share my "Old-timers" story with all of you.. Thank you for letting me share.:D

Sorry for the late reply. Worked back to backs for preceptorship and then went off to Utah for the NSNA Convention. If anyone reading this still has a chance to attend one during their nursing education, I strongly recommend it! Its so worth it in every way!

Army - I applied for pediatrics and when I got that email from the nurse recruiter I looked at all the available floors from the hospital's website, read about them and then choose my top three. Luckily my interview was for my top 2 choices. Like SBoston said, be honest, but be flexible.

SBoston - Any news yet regarding your interview? I have nothing official, but I gave in and called my nurse manger last week tuesday. She called back friday and its sounding pretty positive. I am waiting for an actual letter or something to start getting excited. The start dates are still sketch though because of the whole wait list thing. Hope you got some positive feedback!

I never hear back from theJHH recruiter guys. I selected the top 3 areas I wanted to work at but nothing ever since. I even called her yesterday but her assistant told me that she would forward the message. I am so stressed out. I have applied at Harbor and I was told that they need the position filled by May 1st. I am graduating may 22nd and taking the board June 1st. I applied at Suburban, Bayview, Howard, Sibley,Southern maryland, St Joseph, United Medical Center,Providence, Prince George, Franklin square, Baltimore Washington medical center,Virginia Hospital center, Union Memorial . Suburban and United medical center informed me that they have selected other candidates. What else can i do? Do nursing homes in Maryland are accepting new graduates?

I finally got this reply: Thank you for your inquiry regarding the NURSE CLINICIAN position at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Unfortunately, this position has been placed on hold and is no longer available for interview.

Ditto. This is the second job I've applied for at JHH where they've posted a job, accepted my application, then decide that the job was on hold. I'm not sure what's going on, but it is frustrating.

I applied 2 days ago for a position in the ED at JHH. I got an email tonight from a nurse recruiter saying that the hiring manager doesn't foresee any openings until Fall 2011, but I can still interview. I guess that means it's a "waitlisted" position (I've never heard of this term before)? Although it's not ideal to have to wait until the Fall, I agree that working for JHH is an awesome opportunity. Here's hoping.

Do you mean that JHH isn't hiring anyone until Fall, or just not hiring anyone for ED positions until the Fall? I looked on their website today and there was an opening for a nurse clinician position in "Medicine" whatever that means.

I'm pretty sure it's just for this ED position. All units have different staffing needs, so it may not be the case for the other positions listed.

I applied for pediatric medsurg and they told me right when I applied that it would be a wait list application for the fall. I had never heard of the whole "wait list" thing until then too. It basically means, you interview and have everything ready so when the position opens up, they can hire you immediately instead of doing the interview. This way the position is filled immediately and they never face an actual immediate need for new staff. (Thats my best explanation of it)

I'll hoping they will know their need for the Fall as soon as possible though. I don't mind waiting till the end of August to start as far I know I have a job guarantee.

Sweetie85, have you scheduled an interview yet? I emailed the recruiter back 2 days ago and she hasn't gotten back to me about the interview. Maybe she is just forwarding on my application to the manager and he/she will have to look it over first. I guess it just takes a long time for the whole process.

Definitely a long process! I had my interview on March 25th and I'm still waiting for a official answer. I have a verbal one (i think), but i'm still waiting for a written wait list letter.

From my experience, it did take about a month from the application to have a actual interview date. The interview was still almost a month from when I got my date confirmed. Now its been a month since the interview. Looong process. Just gotta wait it out and let things happen when its supposed too. I'm just studying for boards and looking for other positions to apply for while I wait. I hope I get some good news soon though. I spoke to the nurse manager almost 3 weeks ago, I'm gonna wait it after graduation, May 9 to call her again. Obviously, patience is key with the whole application process, not just for Hopkins, with any hospital.

GOOD LUCK!
