Johns Hopkins new grad 2011

Update: I got an email from their recruiter saying that Hopkins has decided not to fill the job I applied for with new grads. So the only thing I see open is positions in Peds.

Hello Maryland nurses :)
I'm from the Boston area, graduating with my ADN in May. I applied for the JHH clinical nurse residency program and I just got contacted for an interview! I don't know when it will be yet but I'm very excited. I'm not sure if DH and I will be able to relocate, but even the chance to interview with them is an amazing opportunity. Has anyone interviewed there and have any tips? Is anyone in the program currently? I requested the general medicine as my first choice, and critical care and surgery as my secondary choices. The job market is really tough up in the Boston area so I hope something pans out in Baltimore. Everything I've read says the Hopkins name really opens doors for you!

Yes, I did have my interview two weeks ago. It went well and I really liked the facility and recruiters. My first interview was with the nurse recruiter in HR. I met with her for about 30 minutes and we discussed benefits, salary, start date, etc. Then she brought me up to the floor where I was interviewing. I met the nurse manager and our interview was about 1.5 hours. It was pretty intense - she gave me a lot of behavioral questions. Stuff like - "tell me about a time when you had to deal with confrontation". Or "nurses have to think quickly much of the time; give me an example of a time when you had to think quickly and how did the situation resolve?" I was prepared for a lot of those questions from my many searches on this message board, and it was a good thing! There were a few that threw me for a loop, and I made sure to note them and prepare a good answer for next time.

After that, I changed into scrubs and was paired with a nurse on the floor to shadow (AKA "Share time". She had 4 patients. She gave me a few clinical questions that I had to answer. She gave me "report" on her 4 patients and asked me to prioritize which I would see first in the morning. She gave me clinical scenarios, asked what drugs I would give and what care I would expect for the day. That was challenging, but I felt prepared for it. I'm sure she had to report back to the NM on how I did with those questions! I finished the Share Time in about 2.5 hours.

Overall I really liked the facility and the time I spent on the floor. I don't think that JHH was any better than the other hospitals I have been at. They seemed to provide great care and the staff seemed to enjoy their jobs. I haven't heard back from the NM yet, but I should soon. Will keep you all updated. My interview is on Friday. Its technically a wait list interview, so there is no official start date as of now. I really wish there was.

I'll be interviewing for peds med/surg. The interview will probably will be conducted in a similar format so thanks for the heads up. 1 1/2 hours is intense! This is going to be my first nursing interview so I'm sorta scared/nervous. I have been preparing but I'm going to need to review everything before friday. I have my first and only day of preceptorship in peds tomorrow before I fly up to baltimore. I pray tomorrow is jam packed with things that will be fresh in my mind for Friday. I have such limited peds clinical experience so I'm kind of scared for clinical questions.

I have a silly question for you...did you take a extra small hand carry type bag for your scrubs/nursing gear along with your purse to the interview. I feel like I'm carrying so many things, but I don't know what else to do with my stuff. :/

I had SO much stuff. We were only in Baltimore for that one day, so I actually had a whole suitcase with my garment bag. I packed all my "plane stuff" in the suitcase and put my scrubs in the garment bag so I could just switch them out when I changed. The NM let me store my stuff in her office. So I definitely don't think it's a big deal if you have a backpack or briefcase to put your scrubs in. I think they understand you have to have a certain amount of baggage when you have to change mid-way through the day.

Don't work yourself up too much. The questions they asked me were fairly easy (for me). Stuff like, the pt is in fluid overload, what drug would you give (Lasix)? The Lasix treatment isn't going well, she's going into renal failure, what else would you give (another diuretic, low Na diet, dialysis)? If you're not yet a nurse, you can always say you haven't had that content yet in clinical.

The recruiter told me that they are kind of on a hiring freeze right now, so don't worry about being on a wait list. My "start date" was July 5th anyways, so it's a ways off. They have start dates once a month for orienting new grads. So it's very possible that you will start in the summer as well. Keep your hopes up and rock that interview!! I will be graduating in May 2011 and I am looking for a residency program at JHH is it too late to apply?

I called but I was told to apply directly for RNI/ RNII positions but there isn't any posted now. Any idea ?

Just keep your eyes opening for any positions. Check every day or so. The positions change frequently. I have not graduated yet either, so you still have plenty of time. Orientations are run every month.

Thank you! I was wondering what to do with my stuff because I am leaving for D.C. from my interview. Heard the cherry blossoms started blooming. Had a great day at preceptorship today so I should be better with clinical questions.

If I get hired I really hope its a august start date! haha. I really would love a month off between the nclex and starting a job. Ok time to start packing! Thanks for the advice and i'll keep everyone posted on how it goes. :)

About the jobs, seriously keep checking everyday! Sometimes they put up positions, but the application window is only like 4 days so you really need to check everyday. I put the link on my desktop bar and checked every afternoon religiously. Good luck! Hope you find a position that you are looking for.

For everyone that has applied and gone on to interview, what was your timeline like? From applying to hearing from the recruiters to actually interviewing? Have they said when you guys will hear back decisions?

Any help would be great, thanks guys!

1/29: applied for a position

2/8: heard back from nurse recruiter

2/10: interview scheduled (at my convenience, within 2-3 weeks)

3/8: interview

3/22: was told I'd hear back from them in about 2 weeks.

Still haven't heard back but it hasn't been long enough to start calling.

Hey everyone! I'm back home from my interview and I think it went well. I didn't go bad so I hope I did enough to impress the nurse manager.

So basically my interview was the same format as SBoston06's interview. Started out with the nurse recruiter which lasted roughly 1/2 hour. Then I was walked to my floor where I met with the nurse manager for about an hour. It was not intimating at all. She started off with the "why hopkins" and "why peds" type questions. Then I was given a priority questions. Like what order would I see the patients and why. (All those sample nclex questions helped with this). This was followed by many behavioral questions.The manager then explained how the floor worked in terms of team nursing. She asked if I had questions and I did so we went over them. I was interviewing for 2 floors so I had 2 hours of share time on each floor. The nurses were both great. They didn't ask me any clinical questions, but kept asking me if I had questions. Both great experiences! I was at the hospital for a total of 6 hours.

I found Hopkins to be like any other hospital that I have worked at in terms of the technology and stuff but what I LOVED was the support they have for nurses. There are so many people there to help you and everyone on the floors were really nice and friendly. In those terms I think it would be a excellent place to work because you would happier at your job, hence providing better care. The manager said she would call me later this week so I hope she has good news. :)

Good luck to everyone applying to Hopkins or any other hospital. I know its tough being a new grad, but keep trying and literally check everyday if you have too.

In terms of how long it took to get to this point...

11/20 - turned in my first application

12/10 - got rejected

1/31 - application round 2

2/3 - heard back from the nurse recruiter

2/16 - interview scheduled

3/25 - interview at Hopkins

Its been a long process, but I've been patient this long so I'm gonna continue to wait it out as long it takes. :)
