Johns Hopkins ABSN-- RPCV-- vibe?

Published

Hi! I'm planning on applying for JHU accelerated nursing program for June and was hoping I could get some feedback on the vibe there. I know JHU is a big name-- is the atmosphere really competitive once you're in? I'm looking for a high quality, but also supportive, learning environment... Also, I plan on applying for the RPCV fellowship. Anyone out there done this? Can you tell me about how do-able it was time-wise to do both the accelerated program and the fellowship community service hours? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Molly!

Im an RPCV who just got into the ABSN/MSN/MPH program at Hopkins and am wondering the same thing. Did you end up there? If so, are you digging it?

Thanks!

Hi! I was accepted for this June (2010)! but haven't started yet, obviously, so don't have any more info. But I'm super excited! And really hoping for some scholarships as the price tag is giving me cardiac arrythmias :)

Hello all! So it's been almost a year since the two of you started in the ABSN/MSN/MPH program. What do you think of it? Do you love it? What types of jobs are you hoping to land when you're done? I'm looking into applying...I would like to work in global public health. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi CM,

Im at Hopkins now and I really enjoy it. I love being around other RPCVs, not to mention other folks who might have a bit more experience, especially globally, than in other nursing programs. I feel Ive learned alot from their experiences. Also, Ive had the chance to do cool work here in Baltimore. I think the vibe is pretty chilled out and wonderful, at least amongst my friends. Im happy Im here and am not sure yet what Ill do once Im done, or whether Im still going straight through the whole MSN/MPH or if I want to take time to work as an RN for a year or so. If I had to do it again, finances aside, I think I might have stuck closer to where I was living before. This is just because moving around is tiring and all, and if I only stay here for a year, and look for an RN job and then who knows...phew. Its a lot, and roots are nice. All and all though, its a real nice place to be.

Good luck!

Wow what a great post :) I too am interested in working abroad, my undergrad degree was in International Studies ;Concentration Development and Human Rights I also have a minor in French. I decided last year that an MPH would help me and that in the future I would def pursue it.

I would love to do work in French speaking West Africa particularly with health and maybe sustainable development. Right now Im working as a CNA (something I never saw myself doing) but its quite rewarding and its got me interested in working a nurse with and MPH ( international health).

My undergrad GPA was below a 3.0, (2.85) and there are times when I feel like I have a very SLIM chance of getting into any ABSN or MPH program. However I have not taken the GRE yet nor have I began to take any prerequisites, so maybe I do have a chance??

Any input??
