This is for the John Muir nurses in walnut creek
I am currently a preceptee at John Muir and I would love to work at their ICN/NICU one day just bcuz i fell in love with the hospital and I have always wanted to be a NICU nurse. So I have heard that they are opening a new ICN unit with more beds. Does this mean they will be hiring really soon? I will be graduating this Dec 2010, since with this hiring freeze craziness is there hope for me???? Also any tips ?

Your best bet is to excel in your preceptorship and make sure your preceptor knows how interested you are. If there are opportunities for new grads in the next year, her recommendation will go a long way. It might even be worthwhile to introduce yourself to the nurse manager and ask what their hiring plans are.
In the meantime, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply everywhere that you can.

Good luck to you MS Jade. I've come so close but it was not to be for me. I can walk to the campus and have proven myself there. My preceptor is my champion and her good recommendations and connections have opened up a couple other good options right now at other hospitals, but am also waiting for the next JMMC round of new grad hiring. Rumor has it the new grad program is tentatively hold for now.
Several of our December '09 grads worked, did clinicals and precepted at JMMC, all had excellent letters of recommendation and all were good nurses--I can say honestly not a lemon in the bunch. Only a handful were hired into the Walnut Creek program, and later three more were picked up by the Concord program.
Mr. Mike has given you excellent advice--do a great job and let everyone know this is where you want to be. Then follow up with letters and resume updates as you get your extra certs. But don't put all your eggs in one basket. If you are able to move do so and get your experience elsewhere then come back--that's what I'm planning to do.
Good luck on your journey--maybe our paths will cross one day (smile).
