i would not say there is just one.
you should work in ob, pp, peds, icu, ccu, er, med surg, just for starters.
learn how to suture, cast, etc.
lot's more, too.

what kind of area do you work in? i want to work in a clinic setting in a rural area? what do you do on a daily basis? what kind of rn were you prior to get your fnp?

i started out in ob and pp as an rn. i then worked as first assistant with an ob gyn specialist. then i worked and did a 4 year preceptorship with an ob-gyn (same one).
but, the family practice experience came after working as ob-gyn np for about 8 years. i was so focused and very limited in ob-gyn. i worked in er and gained valuable experience for about 5 years, learning casting, suturing (although, i learned how to suture when i was first assistant. that kind of experience does not happen anymore.........usually). after the second certification (in family practice), i then worked in a rural area. i had a practice for 10 years in a very low-socioeconomic area.
if you want further info, please pm me..........i will be happy to assist you.

Hi Siri,
I'm currently debating whether to go into midwifery or FNP. I know I want to do something related to OB but didn't know if FNP will offer that opportunity for me to work with OB patients. You mentioned in your post that you worked as an OB-GYN NP, can you tell me what role you took as an NP on a daily basis, and if it was in a clinic or hospital setting? Any other tips and advice will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
