Jobs as a Pre - Nursing Student

Published

As someone who has not been accepted into the program yet, but have the highest hopes in doing so for the Fall 2016 semester, I was wondering where everyone works now, and if they plan on staying at their current job until they start the program, or if they are seeking a different job into something closer into what they want to do. Ill start

I am a part - time bank teller previously I worked construction but decided to go back to school, I suffered a lot of social anxiety but working at the bank has really helped me hone my social skills, however It is not what I want to do forever hence why I am doing Nursing. I have been looking at some hospital service jobs such as environmental science, linen aide and even a custodian position, would you take those jobs? I just think it is better experience in getting used to a hospital environment, and they may even help pay for schooling and maybe get guaranteed a job after graduation? Is this a smart move to leave the bank for a service related job?

I echo the other posters comments that a CNA job is probably the best job for experience while in nursing school.

I did become a CNA while completing prereqs, but did not work many hrs while actually in nursing school.

The experience gained as a CNA was truly helpful in helping me to see how a hospital operates and also helped me learn how to provide basic pt care. The pay was awful. $9/hr! But the experience and references gained helped me achieve my first jobs as a nurse.

I didn't get a job at any of the facilities I worked at, nor did I get tuition reimbursement, but I still believe the experience benefitted me.

The other reason CNA work was beneficial is because of the flexibility. I would work after class got out at 10pm, I could work 12 hr shifts on weekends, I was able to squeeze hrs inbetween school and family requirements. Not a lot of other jobs offer this type of flexibility. (I was per diem)

CNA is the best experience you can get for pre-nursing. Or you could do Patient Care Tech, which is like a CNA but you don't have to take the state course. Being an janitor or linen aide at a hospital doesn't really count at hospital experience.
