Jobs for New Grads in Michigan

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hello ......Does anybody express there recent experience regarding hiring of New Grads. How is the current job market in michigan ? your response would be appreciated. thanks

I am however fortunate, as the hospital funding my schooling, is working hard to place us in jobs as interns. It may not be in the area that you wanted (unless you may have been an extern) but its something and more than likely they'll bring you on board once you get your license. You can always move around, it's just important to get some time under your belt. The shortage is not as bad right now which is why most managers prefer experienced RN's. It costs too much to train a new grad. But I've been told time and time again, this slump won't last long.

I am really scared too! I applied so many places and only got one interview as a graduate nurse, and didnt get hired :(. I am trying not to worry about it now because I am having a baby in a few months, but I am taking my nclex in august and really hoping to be able to find a job after having my baby so I can move out of my parents. I thought finding a job after nursing school was gonna be so easy! Was I ever wrong.

I am having the same exact problem as you...except the baby and I just passed the NXLEX last week...but besides that 1 interview for grad nurse...not hired...no jobs!

i have now applied to over 15 facilities, 40 apps, 3 interviews, and 3 rejections. i have another interview on monday, but i am trying not to get my hopes of. i have had my license for over a month. this is getting depressing.

i think michigan is just a rough place in general to get a job right now seems like. many people who lost their jobs most likely lost health insurance too, and medicaid doesnt pay as much back to hospitals, so their budget is probably low. i know they're is still a shortage because when i was doing clinicals, there was 1 nurse for every 8 patients, and most of the nurses were pretty stressed out. and probably many of the older nurses who wanted to retire cant now because of the cost of living being too high. this is just my own rationalization of things, but i could be wrong. i'm just kind of upset the school i graduated from didnt do more to help us find jobs; i went to hfcc. i guess the only thing we can do is keep trying. and for those who passed the nclex, atleast that's one less thing to worry about.

My advice is to apply for more of the assisted living, long term-care and nursing home positions available to RNs. I graduated from LCC's accelerated nursing program in May (about 30 of us in our class) and I would say over half of us have jobs already. Only a few of us got jobs in a hospital but, I can count at least 10 people who are working on other areas of nursing (and making good money doing it too). Hopefully, things turn around but, getting experience in the basics for six months or a year may be the best available option right now.

Thanks! I do have an interview tommorrow at a nursing home. I am hoping I get the job!

Over 50 apps at 15 facilities, 3 interviews, and NO job. :crying2:

Wow, this is scary, I'm so sorry guys.

I graduated WSU 2 years ago and we all had jobs and hiring bonuses lined up at graduation. We might have been working midnights but we were working....

Hopefully it will turn around, have you all tried the big hospitals?

Best of luck.

I don't know about everyone else but I have tried every hospital within an hour of my house. Big...small...it don't matter. I finally have my first interview tomorrow. Putting the finishing touches on my portfolio now.

WOW! I remembered when I applied for my externship January of 2008. I put in 4 applications and received 3 calls for an interview. I was hired on the 1st one. I am still at that 1st job as an RN. It is crazy how a little over 1 year can make. Best wishes to everyone. Hopefully the slump will not last for long.

I applied to every hospital within about an hour as well. I finally got a position as a part-time RN in a nursing home (ECF) 8 hr shifts. Not what I expected, but I will take it, happily! :D
