I recently graduated with my BSN in Detroit area. There are zero jobs here.....zero. I have been hearing CA is dying for nurses. Is this true?

If you recently graduated from nursing school, California is a really bad place to be looking for work as a new grad RN. I've been looking for almost a year throughout the state and still nothing. There are over 2500 new grads in 2009 from California alone. Most programs already have folks picked out before programs are even publicly announced and most programs only have a handful of positions (2-6 people hired). If you are fixed on CA, I say go for it but Good Luck. sorry to be a bit of a downer, but I want to be honest :)

The above poster is correct. There are very very very few new grad openings here in CA. I would not move here unless you have a job already secured. Good luck!

You know, you might be luckier if you go to the midwestern states. I also read somewhere that El Paso is hiring new grads pretty easily. If you have the flexibily to relocate then just go anywhere for a year to get your experience. In California right now is difficult even with experience. I know nurses at the hospital I work that it took them over 6 months to get hired. But this is in the Bay Area of course, where is a competition all around. As a new grad here I'm biting my fingers too, I jeep applying and nothing. Also being from out of state will give you right now a little disadvantage also.

No, it is not true. Whoever is spreading that rumor in MI is probably trying to eliminate job competition by getting all the other RNs to leave the state. It is almost impossible for experienced nurses to find work in CA. A new grad from out of state would have pretty much no chance at all.
