Can someone explain to me what PRN, resource, per diem and registry really mean? I've never worked in the US and we didn't use those titles back in the UK. Anyway, I'm now looking for a short term job with no requirements as to hours worked, as I want to work mar-apr-may and then go to Britain for 4 weeks in June, already arranged a long time ago. On return i will take a regular job. So I 'm trying to apply for jobs that will fit and wondering if I'm doing it right.

In my area, PRN means you are called when you are needed, usually without much notice. Resource is usually hospital based and you are scheduled to work on certain days. Per dium means you are paid for the days you work and you make a higher base pay. I'm not familiar with registry.

I am not sure about resource and registry, but I can explain PRN and Per Diem.

For me, PRN and Per Diem were pretty much the same thing. To work PRN means you either come in on days they are short staffed (and you may know this in advance), or they may call you to come in and cover for someone who has called off. Per Diem allows you to choose the days you want to work, you work 'per day'. (someone correct me if I'm wrong but thats what I've always been told). You can also be canceled quickly being per diem if you are not needed.

To work PRN means you will not get benefits with the hospital, but you will get a higher base pay then someone who works full time there. Same goes with Per Diem.
