Hi, I recently started at a new job (union position) and it is temporary full time (18month contract) position. (For context, I live in Ontario, Canada). I am being cross-trained in two different units and I halfway through training in the second unit. I am about two months into the position and I want to change from full time to part time. However, I don't know how to go about it. Should I speak with the manager now or later? Are they likely to change my status or just ask me to quit? Any suggestions or advice? Past experiences?

It depends if they have a part time opening I would think. You have not been there long enough for them to try to jump through hoops to get a new position approved for you. You probably should discuss with your manager and be prepared for any possible outcome. The sooner the better.
