Job PRior to rec'ving RN, question

Published

I have worked in a group home relief staff for the past 6 years {that I absolutely love} as a MHRT-1, and while talking to a friend last night she told me that once I passed my NCLEX she didn't think I would be able to continue to work in the home.

Anyone have info/or able to point me in the right direction for this information?

THanks!!

What does the n-clex have to do with it? It is a test that you pass to get a license. There are no laws against being over qualified.:nurse:

What is an MHRT-1 and why did your friend say that she didn't think you would be able to continue to work in the home?

Jenny67,

Your friend's comment was probably more about the staffing than your qualifications. All organizations have a labor budget with very specific types of positions included in them. An RN earns more then a MH tech.

No matter what job you are hired into as an RN - you MUST perform like an RN - as outlined in your nurse practice act. This may also not be compatible with your current setting's staffing model. Besides, why would you want to be paid much less than you're worth?

Since it appears you really love the group home, perhaps you could return to provide volunteer services when you get an RN job elsewhere.

I am not sure what the last poster means, because you do the job you are hired for. you do the job by the parameters set for that job, and not by your experience or other credentials. (for instance) I know many lpn's who are emt b's, and they perform as emt b's only, and can not use skills not within their scope of practice in that emt job. I also know an m.d. who quit the rat race, and works as a school nurse. He does not do anything out of the scope of the nurse job.

As I am not a genius by any means, anyone have any other knowledge of this subject?
