Just want to know what is the job outlook for rns in ltc in nc? It looks like and from what I've been told is that they are not utilized as much because they have med aides and they hire lpns more because they are cheaper, any thoughts? (Esp. In fayetteville area).

I worked in LTC as a LPN for 18 months before I got my RN. I started off making 18.50 +1.50 shift diff. I had 30 pt and worked 3-11. I got my RN and they wanted me manage the med aides on the hall of 60pt. Do all the assessments, treatments, paperwork, admission, tubefeeding, fingersticks, injections and IV meds for 60pt. Are you kidding me????? They bumped my pay to 20.55 +1.50. I kindly told them no thank you. There was no way I was gonna take on that much responsiblity for all those people plus the residents.

Also, I could have been shift supervisor for the whole building. 180pt. They also have alot of responsibilities. I also didn't want that much responsibilities. Another avenue that I could have persued if they had the position open was Staff Development Coordinator.

So to answer your question, there are several opportunities for RN in LTC. I had been in LTC since 1993 as a CNA and worked up until I got my RN. I am still PRN at the facility but I chose to go to Wake Med and work. The pace on days is still fast and busy but its so much different. I utilize my skills everyday and I am lovin it. I also only have 4 pt so I get to devote all my time to them.
