Job Or No Job While In Nursing School?

Hi,

My name is Autumn, and I'm currently attending Aquinas College in Nashville for my RN. I just finished my first semester and start my second semester at the end of August. I was just curious, would anyone recommend having some kind healthcare job while in nursing school? I technically don't have to have one, because I still live with my mom, but I was just wondering if it would be beneficial or not? I work as a PCA at a home healthcare agency right now PRN. I just want some advice on whether to work while in school to get experience, or focus 100% on school. I mean, wouldn't the experience look good for future jobs? Thanks in advance for the advice!

If there is anything I could rewind in my journey to being a nurse, it would be getting a PCA job @ a hospital at all costs, any other job elsewhere won't really count. So yes, I would highly advice you to get a job in a hospital as a PCA.

Specializes in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

In my program we are very highly encouraged to do so. Clinical doesn't cut it and to be competitive requires a lot of creativity and really putting yourself out there. If you can get a job that is health care-related, then get one. Start building that resume!

Specializes in Acute Rehab, Neuro/Trauma, Dialysis.

If you are able to get a job within a hospital it would probably be beneficial both in experience and in networking. Most people I know who worked in a hospital or did a preceptorship at the hospital of their choice got a job fairly quickly after graduating. If you don't need to work full-time I wouldn't because school can be pretty busy and stressful. But working a few shifts here and there to help out won't hurt and will probably help you in the long run. ;)

Okay. Thanks for the advice! :)
