For the nurses than cannot find jobs, the AHIMA site is claiming that America has a whopping 30% shortage of medical coders, and that is expected to increase by another whopping 57% next year as ICD-10 ( a new coding system that has over 100,000 new billing codes) takes effect. For those of you that are not aware of this job- there are no educational requirements by law, no certification required by law, yet you can obtain a certficate (such as for CPC- certified professional coder) for under $500 at AHIMA or other coding organizations. And being a nurse you are already over the biggest hurdle- being familiar with medical terminology. Hope this information finds some people some jobs!
