I interviewed with the managers of the ER and the Critcal Care Unit and received a job offer from both. I have until Monday to choose which department I want to work in. If you had to choose, which one would you pick and why? Will one or the other look better on graduate school applications or future employment applications?

There are a lot of variables. How busy is the ER? How big is the hospital? Do the critical patients stay at the hospital or the most severe shipped out to a larger hospital? Is there a flight program attached to the hospital or do all the flight patients go to another hospital?

Usually newly hired nurses try one field and if they don't like it, they try another one later.

Congrats on both job offers! Both units will provide you with great experience, so it's just based on your preference. In the ER you'll see a lot of different patients/diagnoses and practice lots of skills. In the ICU you'll learn to care for the sickest of sick. Either way you'll learn a lot and have great experience to build on. Go with your gut and what seems most interesting to you.
