Job experience without clinicals??

Nursing Students General Students

Hey everyone-

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas of how I could get an externship, work as a NA (without certification) or get any other nursing experience over the summer. I am a sophmore and clincials do not start untill the fall, so I am totally unexperienced. Anyone know of any options for a student like me?

Thanks!

Hi, I am not sure about where you are, but I can tell you about UC position in TN. Here you have to be able to type 45wpm, the experience in learning to read and input the Dr.'s orders in the computer system is an awesome plus for starting out in nursing. You gain a lot of experience as you are the person in the middle. lol There is always someone needing you to do something or another. It is a fun job to do, it is also hard. lol But once you get used to it, I think you would enjoy it. I had one yr of that experience before I moved to Health Tech (NA's assistant). I have learned how to do the carepath's on the patients and most of the paperwork associated with their stay. It is really a good opportunity and will give you more confidence. Especially when someone can't read the Dr's chicken-scratch, and you CAN. Hope this helps some.

Here in CA, there are several nursing homes that will hire you and certify you as a CNA after a certain amount of time. Not sure how long, but might be worth looking into.
