Job change to HHN? Advice please

Published

I started in the ER two years ago fresh out of nursing school. I never wanted to work in the ED, but I took what I was offered. I've never loved it, but it was a good experience. I work in a very busy ER where I feel like I complete tasks and don't spend any time with my patients. This was never the kind of nursing I wanted to do. Not to mention how many drug seekers I waste my time on and am treated terribly by patients & families. My facility is all about patient satisfaction with no consideration to staff satisfaction at all.

Last week I went on an interview and was offered a Full time job at Gentiva. I know two people that work at local branches And love it. They offered me $36/visit including mileage. This is at least a 10-12k per year increase in pay for me.

I'm just nervous to make this BIG change. I read a lot of negativity about HHN and Gentiva specifically. I like the idea of spending Time with my patients in their own environment. Also my schedule now is 7a-7p three days per week. I have a baby due in March and due to my husbands job, I need a more flexible job that has more normal hours despite being 5 days per week.

I know The paperwork is terrible and I'm nervous about being on my own with no one to call for help.

Anyone have any advice for me? I need to decide soon!

You should take a realistic view. In order to have a 10-12k increase in your pay, you have to meet that number of equivalent visits. There is no guarantee of any amount of work. You won't be spending the amount of time with your patients as you would like, if you are to meet your/employer's daily/weekly expectations. As for how you are treated, that should not be much of a problem, as you will be having episodic interactions. But that does not guarantee that there won't be problems. Hopefully, you will be acclimated to the job by the time baby comes, should you take the offer. Otherwise, you might want to consider making the change after things have settled. For myself, I can't see doing all the driving around while pregnant, if it can be avoided. I would rather be in one place for work, and it doesn't hurt that it is a healthcare facility, (in case I have a problem). That is something I would consider, if it was me. Hope you are ok either way. And congrats on the little one who is on the way.

I hope you enjoy the change. I'm sure all of that ER experience will come in handy, but I bet you will miss some aspects such as . . . ME! :)
