Job change advice?

Published

Hi Everyone,

Hope all is going well in nursing world. I currently have worked two years as a nurse in a hospital, ( 6 mo Nursing Home, 6 month Med surge, 1 year in observation ). I am trying to find a different area to work in . My skills ( IV, NG tube, Foley, etc.) are subpar to okay. I remember before I became a nurse, when visiting clinics for follow up, the nurse would get H&P, give any medications ( usually just vaccinations for me), and follow up teaching and instructions after the doctor had talked to me. While I have benefitted quite a bit on the floor as far assessments, patient care, and different diseases, I am not sure if this is something I want to be doing in the long term. Are there any jobs with lower acuity level, where maybe the emphasis is teaching and basic meds or patient care from another angle, or a different unit. I heard about Home Health, but I am not sure how I feel about going to peoples houses and I still do enjoy the teamwork you get in a hospital. Unfortunately, getting an RN clinic job is pretty tough to get. I currently live in the Houston area. What are some good job opportunities for me in this area? Any help is appreciated.

Home health is still very team oriented if you are a Case Manager, but it's true that you are physically alone quite a bit. You do do quite a bit of coordination over the phone with other disciplines and physician offices, and that coordination is crucial for the patient's health outcomes. Going into people's homes is really not as terrible as you would think, just requires a different mindset.
