JHH Job interview and shadow day- New nurse!

Published

i'm a new grad and i have an interview at jhh coming up for their psych positions. just wondering if anyone had any interview advice, especially employees at jhh.

if anyone has had the opportunity to have "share time" there i am also curious if they know it's a full eight hour shadow or shorter. i'm prepared for the whole eight hours, and don't want to ask the recruiter and come off like i am uninterested in staying a long amount of time.

also if they like me, i might considering relocating to the area, since the commute for me is about an hour. does anyone have any suggestions on what part of baltimore to live in? i have heard about the jhu gazette postings online, but it doesn't seem like many hospital employees post.

all these questions will be answered soon enough in the interview, but i was just wondering if anyone could give me a head up!:D

First off, good luck on your interview. I'm also a new grad and will be starting there 7/28 on their heart failure unit. I'm way excited about nursing and their new grad program in particular. Anyway, share time is what you make of it. You can stay as long as you want (just don't overstay your welcome!) or not. I was on a time constraint because I was in from out of town. I interviewed with 2 units, did two hours of share on one unit and about an hour on the other. I wanted to stay longer, my nurse even wanted me to help her with some procedures, but I had to catch a train! It was the 2nd unit that I ended up going with. I think the recruiters suggest about 2-3 hours, but what ever you need to get a good feel for the floor is appropriate as that is the purpose of the share time.

As for advice, I would say just relax, be yourself and be honest. I had two interviews back to back. With the first, I was very nervous, and tried hard to "present" myself and tell the woman what she wanted to hear. It was quite uncomfortable, looking back. The second interview I was much more relaxed and honest about my abilities, what I wanted, and what I expected. I felt I really connected with her as well as the rest of the staff. She offered me a position and the first interviewer did not. Who knows the actual reason, but I know I felt I had a better interview with the second one.

Again, best wishes. Hope you find what you're looking for.

I'll have to agree with the above poster. Be yourself. I interviewed on their sugery unit and everyone there was so nice contrary to what i've heard about hopkins. The manager was pretty laid back and i wasn't trying to tell her what she wants to hear. I gave her pretty straight forward answers. I didn't think i'd like hopkins but after doing the share time, i loved it. Everyone was themselves and they were friendly, had real good teamwork and it was just awesome. It made it really hard trying to choose between that and mercy. I really liked the nurse manager on that floor, she's the best. But that $5000 bonus and the better pay was luring and at hopkins you have to pay for long term disability....mercy offers that at no cost. Anyway...after being warned by almost everyone to keep away from the hopkins area and hearing from current employees that they get security emails in the winter about nurses and docs being mugged at knife-point....um....I might go back to them but for now, i'm happy with my choice.

Just curious Proverbs, what is Mercy paying??

The base is 25. 2.75/hr for evening, $4/hr diff. for nights. Weekend diff of 4/hr. So if you work nights on the weekends, you're looking at $33/hr. The weekend diff at hopkins was $0.36/hr (no i did not type it wrong. it's 0.36). They offer loan repayment but i don't have any loans so i don't benefit from that. They have other silly little bonuses like perfect attendance and ..... and i think they have an onsite daycare - i don't have kids so i really don't care about that.

I'll have to say the nurse recruiters at both hopkins and mercy are nice.

just to add eagers, i didn't choose mercy for the money - i don't think anyone should choose a place of work for the love of money. I had other more important reasons. Plus, mercy was my first choice and i applied to hopkins as a fallback if i didn't get in but the shadowing experience made me really consider the hopkins as a place to work. In the end, i went with my first choice. The 5k was enough to convince me to leave philly.
