Jeff State Spring 2014 Hopefuls

Published

Hi everyone!! I currently attend Jeff State Shelby Campus. I am applying for the Spring this fall. I am so excited! I have taken the teas once but did not get the store I wanted so I am currently preparing to take it at least twice before the summer is out! So pumped...anyone else?

As far as I know it doesn't have anything to do with nursing school. I was just checking bc I'm still waiting to hear if I was accepted or not and I was not sure what "Program Code" was referring to.

You won't have to pay for anything at orientation, they'll just give you a packet with ALL the info needed like what and how to get books(bundles or not) , they usually include the background and immunizations info in the packet but they have changed it up since I was in(but I think that was a good idea bc it gets crazy once the semester starts and the more they can get out of the way the better things go), so I could be wrong but I am pretty sure you won't have to pay anything. You'll also get info on how to order your uniform and I know the "uniforms" have changed to gray scrubs instead of a solid white uniform. You'll get the first months schedule but it is subject to change and probably will (and be prepared to be in school everyday for the first two weeks) On your schedule they'll tell you what to read and I would start asap bc it's a lot and you'll thank yourself later :) I pulled my old notes and old schedule the other day and I think the first test in fundamentals was on safety, vitals, and one other subject but I can't recall right now. But it's really just getting ALL of your paper work done and you'll pay for a drug screen like the first week or two of class I think. And please remember this is if they haven't changed anything lol if anyone has anymore questions I'll be happy to answer, but like I've said before it has been a while since I was in first semester :)

Hiiii, So how far along in the first semester will it be before we wear our scrubs? just wondering :)

Now when I walk in Jeff states book store I can actually buy a t-shirt that says Jeff state nursing student!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh yeahhh!

oh ok :) and I'm not sure... I think they do it, but they may have changed it up ( that's why I was wondering about that letter lol just in case I missed something)

On my old schedule it was like late feb early march, and they'll tell you that you have to get "some" knowledge before putting you in clinicals lol......I'm looking at my old schedule now and it says we did exam one in the first week of feb and then we did safety validations and then in late feb we have our first clinical calculations test (which you get three attempts and you CAN'T participate in clinicals until you pass. I think they let you go, you just can't give meds and then there is like some "punishment" toward your grade bc you didn't pass.. and if you don't pass the calculations then you technically fall the class bc you can't do clinicals without passing your calculations and if you don't pass clinicals you don't pass fundamentals.. but I haven't seen anyone NOT pass clinicals) The calculations aren't bad they just get in your head and you're like "holly crap! this COULD fail me!" but once you get it...you've got it :) It is really not that bad, promise! So if you pass clinical cal. then you start the first week of march :) And it looks like it lasted like 5 weeks or so...and fundamentals is the only class you do a clinical for, you'll have "lab" for health assessment and I think you just have lecture for pharm.

Wow... Thanks for all the insight! I'm beginning to get a little nervous!! I'm so glad I got all my other classes out of the way before I applied. Am I the only one on here going to be at the Jefferson campus?

thanks for all the info. Very helpful, gives an idea of about how busy its about to get! Do you remember How many days a week and the timeframe the classes were your first semester? It looking like I may have to go to night shift at my job if its more than two days a week. I know a few nursing students who say they had to quit working eventually. I know my sister did. I hope I'm able to balance it all.

You're welcome! And if they didn't change anything, then we'll go all day Mon for fundamentals ( 9 to 3), tues half a day for health assessment(9 to 12) , wed half a day for pharmacology(9 to 12) then we'll be split up between thurs and Fri for clinicals....first semester is crazy but so worth it, second semester (which I love) gets better with everything (schedule, material, organization mainly)....I do remember though, thefirst two weeks in nursing school we'll be doing something EVERY day....I remember I didn't even get to work! But it'll get better as we get into the semester. :) hope that helps

I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I HAVE to work at least part-time, so I'm just ready to know what our exact schedule will be. That way I'll know what days I can work. What hospitals do they use for clinicals? I'd really like to know, because that's another part I'm nervous about. Just ready to get this all going :)

A girl in my micro class said she knew someone in the program and she said there are 5 hospitals that they send us to. UAB, Brookwood, St. Vincent's East, some hospital in Blount county and UAB highlands (the old HealthSouth)... I am really excited too but super nervous! I know this is what we've all been working our butts off for but now everything just got REAL... Lol

I don't know how true the info is about the hospitals but I just thought I'd share what I was told...

Well thanks for the info. I was hoping we WOULDN'T be going to UAB. I hate going downtown. Anyway, I'm sure we'll find out more info at Orientation. I know some Jeff state students did clinicals at Shelby Baptist, but I don't know which campus they were from. I work there, and it's only 30 minutes from my house, so I'd love to do my clinicals there. Probably wont get that lucky though.
