Jeff State Orientation Spring '09

I don't know anything about orientation...guess we will find out together on wednesday!

A friend of mine is in the PT program and she said orientation was a joke, didn't seem like anyone knew what was going on, but I think that the regular full time programs are slightly more organized...

Thanks. A few friends in the FT program at Shelby shared similiar stories. From what I understand, orientations in the past have had several guest speakers but minimal info about actual nursing classes/clinicals. And I was warned to not let all the info they throw our way freak me out. It seems that the first two semesters they overload you with materials and there tends to be lot of self-study required. This is their way of weeding out students that aren't willing to give it 110% or serious about the program. We shall soon see!

I'm Robin -- it will be great to have each other to lean on during school. I also have several friends who are already nurses (including my mother and all of her co-workers) so we will have plenty of support and help when we need it!!

I have to skip a class on Wed to go to orientation!! Good thing my professor is so lax about that.

I dread finding out how much everything will cost me come Spring semester.

Oh, I don't know if you're a current student there, but I got on to look at the schedule for the semester, and from what it looks like, we are OFF on Monday, but have class Tues - Friday....I would much prefer having Mondays off!! I'm just so happy to finally get in!!

I'm Amy. That's awesome that you have connections! My buddy will also be with us on Wednesday. Between the three of us, we'll have lots of support (we have buddies in the progam ahead of us and nurse friends, too!).

I've been at Jeff State for a few semesters now and am taking my HUM elective this time around. Thankfully, I will only have NUR classes to focus on for the next 5. I transferred from UAB's nursing program after a 12 yr break. :wink2:

A friend that started Fall 08 semester said it cost her near $3000 for everything. But that included tuition, books, scrubs, shoes, stethoscope, etc. She got "the good stuff" so it might not be that much, but 1st semester is still expensive. YIKES! I've never had a student loan but think that route might be better for us at this point. Also, I got an invitation to Phi Theta Kappa and noticed they have scholarships but wasn't sure about the membership fee (if it would be worth it). Do you know anything about it?

I'm so happy to get in! I still can't believe it! Do you know what the cut off was? I had 191 points and saw that someone else had 190.

I don't know what the cut off was. I had 194, and I know that someone on here had 180 and didn't get in, so I guess it was somewhere between 181 and 190 :-)

Amy, can you tell me what room orientation is in? I have (already) misplaced my letter!!!!

Congratulations on being accepted into the program! I started the PT program in Fall '08. At orientation we received a packet of information and filled out tons of paperwork. We also paid a drug testing fee. I think it was $46. Or maybe they just told us about it and we paid at the first class. Bonnie Glass and someone else spoke. We received a bag of goodies- pen, sticky notes, etc. We were also given a list of what we would need money for in the next 2 semesters. But there have been a few things thrown at us that weren't on the list. Everything seemed very together at orientation, but since then I've found the program as a whole to be very disorganized. I thought the problem was just with the PT program though. Blessings!

If you got accepted to the nursing program straight up yah then i can believe its about 3000 dollars even more. Thats the 1st term of nursing school which consist of nursing classes and prerequisite (MTH 116 or higher, BIO 201, NUR 102, NUR 103, NUR 104. Thats a total of 15 credit hours!! Since you been there for a few semesters already and only got a HUM elective this time around and mentioned you only have NUR classes to worry about. I assume you finished your prerequisites already. So it prolly wont cost u much, my guess a little bit over a thousand 1st term (guess only). Thats if you only have your nursing classes in the way, which would be a total of 8 credits. NUR School gets less stressful as u progress but still need to put all your heart into it or u wont make it.

I went to UAB too, but decided after my 1st sem there, to pursue the associate degree. It would be faster and if i decide to go for the BSN I can apply for the transition RN to BSN which would take only a year and i can work at the same time.
