JCAHO Visit

What is it like when JCAHO visits? They are expected to be here in a few days (or might be there now). I forgot to do something small ( I am sorry too). When we got critical lab values on patients, we tell the doctors and chart it in two places. Usually the lab calls us about critical lab results, and that is our reminder about charting. The lab forgot to call, and I forgot to chart it in one of the two places. The patient was treated quickly and is fine, but I feel nervious about it. Of all the times to forget.

Thanks.

JCAHO made a visit to my unit this week. I haven't been through a survey before but I was not nervous about them being here. My unit have hectic days now and then but I still continue to do my usual patient care but more check and balance.

I have to agree with WOOH about how great it is when they are making the visits. Management team were all over the unit. I'm doing my usual CYA charting plus more review. They were hovering over me and reminding me constantly on stuff to know more than the actual JC staff. This makes me doubt myself more on my charting and wasting more of my time. I agree, double charting SUCKS. The entire unit was so nice and quiet. Some nurses already called in sick to avoid the management staff from clawing their nails on their backs, but somehow we were amazingly fully staffed. Our Pharmacist input all med orders right on the unit. The doctors signed off all the orders on time AND wrote LEDGIBLE orders + signed, time and date all of them as well. Care plans were updated, labs were on time, the med cart were fully stocked, VS machines and glucose testing machines were within reach. Of course, the patients have the usual medical issues + more issues, however, the entire staff was amazing and the day went very smoothly. If everyday is actually JCAHO day that would be awesome with adequate staffing and fully equipped unit all the time. Will that ever happen?
