Jail/Prison Nursing

Hi I have four months until I am finished with my LPN course. I was considering going into jail or prison nursing. I was wondering how the pay is and if it's dangerous. I know that it could possibly be but I just need to have a piece of mind.

When choosing a place to work are there certain things that I should look for and are there any places that you recommend over the other.

Thanks A lot,

Candace :yeah:

Hi Candace:

I currently am employed within the MDOC as a secretary with the mental health program. I start Nursing school in the Fall at Mercy in Northwest Ohio. The pay within MDOC is great, I'll provide a link to the current salary stats and benefits. Although you are working within a prison and have contact with some of the most violent people in our society, IMO you are always safe. The officers and other employees are always alert. Security is excellent!!! As ane employee you will have to sign in and out of every building you enter Once you hired in, you go through training on how to handle every situation from "set ups" to "physical encounters". Everyday is different inside a prison, and you have to remember to always know your surroundings. I've been here a year and I love it. I'm never afraid, but I remember that I work inside of a prison.

A registered nurse within MDOC starts off at 20.66 and can reach 29.29. Here is the link http://www.michigan.gov/mdcs If you scroll down, you see another link that reads "ATTENTION LPN's and RN's"..

I hope that helps.... GOOD LUCK

$20.66 for a RN?? That's garbage pay. How do they get anyone to work there. $29.29 is top scale? That's 2 or 3 years into any metro hospital. I'm suprised they find anyone to staff the prisons.

Thanks a lot for the info. But I agree 20 bucks isn't a lot for a RN. There's a long term care facility near my house that starts LPNs off at 25. 30. I am really interested in jail nursing so maybe I could do it on weekends or something.

The duties of a RN inside the prison system, are not the same as a RN in a hospital setting. Their duties may include passing meds, giving injections, and taking vitals. IMO, that's pretty good and you only have to work an 8 hour shift.

For that pay i'd take on the responsibility of a Nurse Aide, but an RN? New grad here making 27.50 an hour (nights), i'd find it hard to justify a 7 dollar an hour pay cut!
