I was hoping to get some input on whether you think it is better to cross-train to be able to be plugged in wherever you might be needed, or specialize in one particular facet of nursing?
I have a feeling that it depends on the clinical setting in which you work, as well as your own strengths & weaknesses... but I was just wondering what those nurses with the all-important real-world experience have found.
Thank you,

I've always worked FT in NICU, but cross-trained to PICU/Peds and the ED. I ended up working a lot of extra hours, but I feel more flexible and have a better view of the "Big Picture" in nursing.

Like you I am just coming out into the REAL NURSING world. I agree that it would be very benifical for nurses to cross train. Not only does it allow you to see the complete picture and a better representation of patient care, but I believe that it also makes you a more valuable asset to the hospital or agency that you work for. It is scary as a "new nurse" though because some days I am not sure that I am comfortable and competent in just one area let alone multiple.

When i did my grad year i went to ICU then a med-surg floor and then to OR where i have stayed. Spending time in these different areas was great for me because i learned so many different skills, which you don't have the opportunity if you only work in the one area. At the moment i wish i could spend maybe one day a week back in ICU because i feel like i've lost certain skills from working in the one are for too long.
Thank you for your insights. I am looking forward to experiencing the different areas. I know I have preferences... I enjoy the ER, and I think I will like surgery; other areas, such as OB and ICU, I will be going into for the first time. One of the things that has drawn me to Nursing is the variety of settings. Discovering the "best fit" for me should be fascinating. Being versatile would be a good thing too.
