IV therapy question

Published

Hi,

We recently had a quiz over F/E and IV's and I need some reassurance that I have the correct info. There was a question regarding fluid replacement, particularly to replace electrolytes. The correct answer was D5W....and I was not sure how this could be since D5W does not replace electrolytes. Am I wrong?? Or losing my mind??

It's really impossible to give you the justification for the answer without having the exact question BUT think about what type of solution D5W is (isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic) and what those different types may do to fluid and electrolytes within both the vascular system and extracellular space. That should start to point you the right direction.

Best of luck.

Thank you! As I went back through my notes I started to realize that D5W was in fact the most correct answer for that question since LR was not an option as an answer. I think it just threw me that the instructor stated that LR was the right answer, yet it was not a choice on the quiz. Thanks again!

How does D5W affect sodium? Chloride?
