I am getting very frustrated! I am learning fluids & electrolytes and I am at a loss when it comes to IV solutions. I'm trying to figure out what these solutions would do to the cells and for what purpose they are being used for. I have looked in every book and every internet source and it is just not clicking in my head. I even found the post that daytonite had posted with the table of common iv solutions but I just felt it was very basic. Anyways if anyone could help me out with the following solutions, what they do to the cells and why they would be used (what kind of scenario) I will be forever greatful!
ISOTONIC SOLUTIONS
5% dextrose in water
0.9% Normal Saline
Ringers solution
Lactated ringers
HYPOTONIC
Half normal saline 0.45% NaCl
HYPERTONIC
5% dextrose in half normal saline (D5/0.45 NaCl)
3% normal saline
