IV Certification and Blood Draws

Published

I am a new grad from NJ. I just relocated to California and am looking to land my first job. In NJ where I attended school we do not learn to start IV's or perform blood draws as RN's are usually trained to do so in their first job. However, several of the job listings I have seen state IV certification required. I currently live in the Inland Empire (Lake Elsinore) but travel to Orange County everyday to take my daughter to college. All the courses I see for IV certification/Blood draw state that they are for LVN/LPN. Can anyone tell me where I can find a certification course in either the Inland Empire or Orange County? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The one I took was for LVNs as well. Look into those. My college would not let us do IVs either! Crazy.

You can check the BON. They should have a list there.

Specializes in ER, Trauma, Med-Surg/Tele, LTC.

There is no such thing as "IV certification" for RNs in California as it is already within an RNs scope of practice to do IV therapy -- they do not need a separate certification to be allowed to perform it. As an RN, taking a class would be purely for educational purposes, not certification.

I went to Genesis MEC in Brea for my LVN IV certification and half the class were RNs.

I took one this past spring and there were maybe half RNs and half LVNs in the class. They give you 4 CEs if you're an RN and I forget how many if you're an LVN, but more than 4. It's not in the Inland Empire though. It's at Grossmont Health Occupations Center down in Santee (east of San Diego). They also have a very highly recommended RN Refresher class if you or anyone you know needs to take it. I had to take it this past spring since I was coming up on my 2 year post-graduation mark with no job yet.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm glad to know that I will not be the only RN in whatever program I choose to attend.
