IV ceritified questions?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Hi everybody. I have a question regarding IV Therapy certification. I am IV certified in CA, so am I eligible to become IV certified in another state? for example MA?

I really appreciate for the responses!

thank you

Yes, you are "eligible", but you may have a few additional hoops depending on the state. Was your IV certification included in your initial license (are all LPN's who study/license in your current state automatically certified or were you required to obtain additional education/supplemental certification)?

The most effective route would be to contact the state your considering (most have a web site) and find approved LPN and/or IV courses. Most states who require separate certification to perform venous access, make it quite clear on their site. If your states BOTH include IV instruction as part of your education, and NEITHER state requires SEPARATE certification, then it should be taken care of when you apply for your license with that state (the board would review your current states curriculum to determine if you meet licensing/IV requirements for their state, and should either be insufficient, you would be notified of the next step).

If BOTH your current state and the state in which you would like to apply are SEPARATELY certified, you would more than likely need to obtain your "initial license", then be required to submit any IV coursework you studied in your LPN program to the state and/or a "board approved" IV cert. instructor for approval (this could involve a review fee, but some instructors will assist as a courtesy). If the material meets state requirements, the instructor would notify the board that your education is sufficient, and the state should approve your certification. If it does not, you may be required to complete additional instruction to obtain IV certification for that state.

If both states are different (one includes IV in the LPN program, and the other requires separate certification) that could complicate the process even more.....

If your state AND the state you wish to practice in are "compact" states, that may change things again. Keep in mind that just because you can use a "compact" license in another "compact" state, that DOES NOT necessarily mean that you are authorized to perform venous access. You may still need to obtain SEPARATE IV certification in the state of practice.

I don't know how long you have been a nurse, or how well versed you are on the "nurse compact" (so please forgive me if I am being preachy), but should you work in another state on a compact license you are STILL RESPONSIBLE for knowing the "state specific scope of practice". Just because you can perform a function in your "home" state, does NOT necessarily mean you can perform the identical function in the honoring state.

Please remember that ALWAYS speaking with your board of nursing directly is the safest and most accurate way to obtain the information and or requirements you need to protect YOUR license....

Good luck in getting things accomplished!! I hope this is helpful.....
