It's that time of year...Christmas stories

Christmas is coming. Half of us will be schlepping the halls.

This time of year always brings back one particular Christmas on duty.

First rounds , I am assessing a patient whose name was Jesus, a Mexican-American patient with a common first name for that culture. His wife was at his bedside. Her name was Mary.

His room mate's name was Joseph.

I realized.. it was Christmas morning and I was in the room with Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Spent the rest of the shift in awe.

What's YOUR Christmas story?

I'm working tonight in an end stage dementia unit. One of our little ladies was still up and a little restless when I got here at 9:30 PM. One of our other resident's daughters recently purchased a couple of new baby dolls for our unit for Christmas, so I handed one of them to this little lady. She proceeded to sit down in a recliner, close her eyes, and cradle the baby to her chest while Christmas music played softly in the background from a radio on the unit that we keep tuned to a station that plays Christmas music 24/7. I get tears in my eyes now just thinking about it. She finally went to bed (with her baby) a couple of hours ago.

The positive side if working with medically fragile children, at least Christmas Eve into early Christmas morning is to play "Santa"...

I was able to place a hat on one of my neurologically devastated kiddos whose tumor is getting bigger and this may be her last Christmas; it will keep her temperature regulated, and will suit her girly style of fashion. :)

My other assigned neuro devastated kid pt who just came back from a hospital visit where it looked as though he would not be returning had a new soft plush that plays music softly in the background; soothing for the here and now.

We just finished putting presents in the rooms; administration is giving us breakfast.

Hope all have a Merry Christmas!
