ISU LVN to BSN program California

Nursing Students Indiana (ISU)

Published

ISU has two distant learning LVN to BSN programs. One is for California LVNs and the other is for non-California LPN students. While the programs are similar there are some differences.

1. The Calif BON has placed a limit on the amount of nursing classes that Calif ISU LVN to BSN students can take during a semester. Other states have no restrictions and non-Calif students would matriculate through the program and graduate faster than Calif students;

2. California ISU students are also students of Sanoma State University and must pay an extra fee to Sanoma State; ISU issues the diploma but Sanoma State is the qualifying university that will sign the paperwork for the Calif BON;

3. Lastly, TCN has one employee--the Sanoma State liaison--who deals with the paperwork and another person who is responsible for arranging the Calif clinical facilities and getting the paperwork signed.

This thread has been started to address the issues that California ISU LPN to BSN students or potential students are facing. Have questions about the California ISU LVN to BSN program, feel free to share.

Thanks so much, you rock. secondly, congrat on your way toward your BSN. you gonna be a great nurse. My only question is about finding a clinical preceptor in CA. There are problems. What else can be said?

Hello LadyinScrubs, I have taken and passed all challenge exams and the TEAS exam. I am now waiting for the acceptance letter into the program. How are classes going for you? I'm sure you are doing well. I guess you have a couple of months left before graduation. Wow! I can't wait to get to that point.

Glad to hear of your progress. Waiting for your acceptance letter will not be the only waiting you will having in the program. As far as graduation, I am waiting to get the clinical assignment for this semester. Since there are none available, my clinical has been changed to fall. Hopefully there are clinicals at that time. This delays graduation.

Wow! I hate to hear that. How long will this delay graduation for you? When was your original graduation date?

Hi LadyinScrubs! You rock! You are so helpful and reading your posts make me feel confident that I made the right decision doing the LVN to BSN program through ISU. I live in so cal. Orange county to be exact. I just started the program last week. In fact, I'm starting from no pre-reqs and going through The college network, which I think is totally worth it. Anyways, my concern is clinicals. How can I find out what sites there are? I know it changes from time to time, but it's something I like to find out. Also, I currently work an at acute hospital, could I ask my hospital to precept. me?

Congratulations on continuing with your education. You are just starting with your pre-reqs and gen ed requirements, it is a long journey. Just take it a day at a time. Set a goal and adhere to it, even when you do not want to.

As far as clinicals in California, write a letter to ISU and outline your concerns. Ask that they reply about your concerns in writing. This way you would have a paper trail just in case ISU can't find any clinicals for you. ISU has a tendency to blame the student for its inability to locate clinicals for Calif ISU-SSU LVN-to-BSN students.

You might be able to do your clinicals at your facility, however, it is completely up to the facility. Many ISU students tried to get their facility to allow them to take their clinicals there but the facility turned them down. Additionally, the clinicals must adhere to the standards described by ISU. Many facilities may quality for one clinical and not another.

Best of luck.

To the "LadyinScrubs" thank you for all your posts, it's been very helpful and informative. Most are from 2011 and it's now June 2012 and I things change quickly. I'm new to posting so I've posted the below in a few places but wanted feedback from you if you have any experience with this? Thank you in advance....

Has anyone taken a straighterline (SL) Algebra class and transferred to ISU for the LVN-BSN program? I'm getting ready to take my final for algebra and am trying to figure out if I need the exam proctored. SL states it's an option and ISU doesn't seem to be able to answer, at least those who I've spoken to. They accept ACE and said they accept SL but I can't find any information specific to whether proctoring is required for these prerequisites. Does anyone know what the transcripts look like with or without the proctoring option? I've used CLEP/DSST/Excelsior for my other classes and this is my only experience with straighterline. I'm going back to school after 20 years - much more complicated than it used to be!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a great day....... :)

I have no information about straightline--possibly others can help you. ISU does accept classes from Ivy Tech a community college in Indiana. They have online courses and the cost is less than TCN--just thought I would pass that info along.

How long does it take to be notified if you were accepted into fall or not? I applied and am waiting anxiously.

I have no idea how long it takes to be notified; it depends when you applied--call ISU for info. If you applied within the application period for Fall, you should be notified soon. If you applie after the fall deadline, you should be notified after the deadline for Spring 2013.

Ladyinscrubs,I'm considering starting the lvn to bsn program in CA but am worried because of the issue with clinicals. I'm wondering has any of that been resolved? I see its been a little while since that was discussed. Is your graduation still postponed? Any info would be much appreciated.
