I am in my third year of nursing, and i have the opportunity to do a 4th, getting my masters. I just wanted to know as a graduate, is there any benefit to get this now, better opportunities? salary/benefits? anything?

Thanks for your info guys.

Specializes in Jack of all trades, and still learning.

Can you defer your Master's for a year, do the grad year and then do the study? I know where I work the Masters will give you nothing financially, but will be useful when applying for senior positions in the future.

Thanks for the reply. No i cant defer, the deal is i have to complete it as a fourth year, otherwise if i defer, it will take 1.5 years, instead of one.,...

If I was in your shoes I would complete my Masters if only for the fact you can do it in a year.

In terms of more money, you will only see that in a management position because floor nursing in only based on your hours worked, not qualifications (at least it is here in NSW).

But having a Masters will open more doors for you in the long run and career-wise be of enormous benefit.

Djuna, thanks very much for the advice.

Is there a certain amount of hours a RN can work, or can a RN work as many shifts as they like a week? If you prefer night shifts, is it possible to request all night shifts?

Thanks

Sam

Specializes in Med onc, med, surg, now in ICU!.

Actually, if you get a master's you will be entitled to a whole $30 extra a week as a continuing education allowance (once you have the master's, that is).

Where are you studying that offers this program? Did you go in as an undergrad with no nursing experience, or were you an EN first? I am fascinated. My uni only offers honours as a fourth year thing, and it's a post-grad degree to get a master's.

here in the Philippines, having master's degree provides additional compensation especially if you're in the academe. Just a thought :-)

can someone direct me please for some primer in applying for a job in Australia? I have some relatives in Sydney.

Bethem,

The university of Sydney offers this program, B Health Science M Nursing 4 years.

Are u able to choose shift preference? Is there a limit to how many shifts you can work?

Thanks :)

Do you mean while you are studying or after graduation? As an RN you can work however many shifts you want to and whichever shift you prefer but this is dependent on a few factors, especially as a new grad.

Djuna,

Yup i meant as a graduate. Thank for the info. Much appreciated.

Also, if you wanted lets say to be a CNC, do you HAVE TO go the 8 years as a regular RN first?

Sam

Thanks Djuana!

Besides years of experience, are there any post grad cert or dip in particular that would help to be a CNC?

Cheers

Sam
