Is working night shift expected of new grads?

Published

Hi--

I graduate 5/12/06 and am applying for jobs. Is it expected of new grads to work nights? I have two kids and would like to at least try to get a day shift. There are some outpatient clinics hiring; I thought about applying to one of those. I don't want to make anyone upset by "jumping rank" or anything.

to me, it depends on how the employer views noc shift.

it can be the hardest shift to fill, therefore would have new grads fill it since they have the least seniority.

or, it can be viewed as a shift where a seasoned, experienced nurse is desired for you wouldn't want to leave a new grad alone and w/o proper backup.

so............it depends.

Don't assume night shift isn't desirable. At the hospital where I tech, I see that some people prefer it because of following reasons: shift differential, many patients are asleep and visitors are gone (not all, but many) so it's quieter, fits their schedule better with kids. Not everyone wants to work days.
