this is kind of stupid question, but if nurses are not unionized at the facility they are working, is there any way a nurse can join the union somehow?

joining an outside union, to the best of my knowledge, would probably be of little to no use in your facility. if you wanted to be part of a union, you and your co-workers would have to unionize in your own facility. there is getting your co-workers and facility to agree to it. just make sure you cross every i and t b/c most facilities don't want a union.... gee, nurses being afforded a few protections from administration - we (nurses) must have something wrong with us

In order to unionize in a workplace a vote must be held and a large majoity must approve. Facilities are not allowed to intimidate or threaten you for attempting to unionize. the best start tould be to contact one of the national unions they have lawyers that know the system and how to start it. The one at my facility is SEIU, but there are many others. The lawers will want names of the people intrested to prove intrest in unionization

The union came to my facility with all sorts of promises for the workers. This particular union does NOT include licensed or administrative staff. They still don't have a signed contract because they are asking for things that are impossible to give. My biggest complaint about them: the workers walk around with pins (and attitudes) demanding respect, but they think absolutely nothing about being disrespectful to their co-workers.
