Is Trauma a type of Med/Surg?

Hi All,

I'm a pre-nursing student, starting school in the fall. A few years ago, I worked on the Trauma floor at a large Level 1 Trauma inner-city hospital. LOVED IT! Every MVA, stabbing, shooting that went down in the city and the surrounding areas came to us. We also had a step-down unit within the unit..and then there was the SICU next door.

Anyway, I'm most interested in working in Peds, PICU or the NICU..but I wouldn't mind being back on a trauma floor.

Just curious..would this floor be considered a med/surg floor? Thanks!

I know someone with more experience and knowledge than I have will answer this, but the short answer to your question is, No, trauma nursing is not med/surg. It's more closely related to emergency and critical care nursing. Most of the hospitals in my area require a minimum of six months med/sure experience, with a preference for one year or more. However, some will make exceptions if you have previous trauma/emergency/critical care experience in another capacity--EMT, NA, etc. Do what you need to get the experience you need, and then follow your passion. We always need good nurses in every area. Welcome to the world of nursing!
