I plan on applying to Wolford at some point, and it's actually one of my top schools due to its cost since schools here on the west coast are more expensive (with the exception of 1). I've gone on vacation in Fl (Miami and St. Petersburg), and I definitely wouldn't mind living there for a few years. I've never been to Naples though, and I know that a lot of racism is based on geographical location.
I have ran across a few comments on websites that state a lot of racism takes place in this program. I am half Caucasian/Asian (although I look like a white guy with black hair-everyone thinks I'm Italian or Spanish), and my wife, who would be moving to FL with me is 100% Japanese. We live in an area of California where there is a lot of diversity, a lot of interracial couples, a lot of mixed kids, and very very little racism-if any.
Does anybody think that we, as an interracial couple (feels weird to say because I never have to think about it where we live), would experience any difficulty living in Naples? Did you guys have any minorities in your class? Were they treated okay?
I've ruled out most schools in the south for this reason, but I've never really grouped Fl in with the rest of the south.
Thank you!

Miami aside, FL is still the south. That said, I wouldn't let fear of racism stop you from pursuing your goals. I'm a black woman and have never let racism deter me at all.

As a fellow white storm trooper who lives in the South, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Black storm troopers do take a lot more crap. But they all have huge blaster rifles.
Serious reply: I agree with the post above mine. You may be surprised to find out that cities in the South tend to be fairly progressive with more level headed people compared to the rural South. Though I can't speak specifically about Naples... Or Florida for that matter.

I've heard some bad stories about Naples, but it's really ft Myers (it's an hour away from Naples) that seem to have an issue with interracial couples. As soon as you walk into that town, you can feel the negative vibe and stares.

To be quite honest about it, I've lived in the south a lot, and my friends who would have had any problems, tended to stay around the house a lot. If you aren't trying to go to the wrong "kind" of club at midnight, but are instead at home in your own living room with your family, you can avoid a lot of things. This was the topic of conversation in the group at least once. While I may not seek out opportunities in certain areas, I do not think I would go out of my way to avoid them either. I would just chill out while trying to keep a low profile. Good advice for a lot of situations, not just those dealing with differences of acceptance of race.
