Is it possible to work VA FT and be a military reservist?

Published

Since both are government jobs, I was wondering if this is allowed.

Thanks.

Not sure if anyone knows the answer to this one, but if you work for the VA full time and join the reserves as well, are you eligible for retirements from both the VA and the reserves after 20 years, or is that classified as double-dipping?

BTW great input everyone, this thread has been helpful since I am really interested in working for the VA.

you can draw both retirements and the military can be either active or reserves.

Yes it is possible.

Many people do it

I do.

In fact, as a member of the reserves or guard, you are entitled to 15 days of military leave per year for any military commitment that you have. You have the right to use for a drill weekend, or for your two week AT.

And yes, you can get a your retirement from the VA and from the Reserves or Guard as wll. It is not double dipping

How do i start the process of getting into the VA system anyone knows? i have 4 years prior service military and now am an RN ready to give back?

Here is what you have to do. Bring your DD 214, your resume, your active RN lic, a official copy of your transcripts, your CPR/ACLS certs and go in person to the VA and find the nurse recruiter. Fill out the application

include a copy of your transcripts and everything else.

Remember that you are dealing with federal workers. They are slow, they are union, they dont really care who works at the VA, or that your are a veteran. Follow up every week with your application, give them two weeks to

process it first. I would also recommend that you leave several business cards with your application, different nursing managers look at your resume etc.

Jeckrn and Patrick1rn thanks a lot for the info, it's good to know this may be an option for me. I am 36 and the option of a double retirement someday is nice to envision. I question if doing both would tie me and my wife down too much or be too much on our plate. Thanks again for the info, I really appreciate it :wink2:

Thank you very much for the info, I will start with that route. Have you heard of any hiring freeze for the VA?

www.vacareers.va.gov

go to that and see what openings are available

they say they might freeze openings, but not really

true for nursing.
