Is it possible.....

Is it possible to get 2L of urine from a patient at one time after inserting a foley? A nurse inserted a foley and said 2L of urine was collected. Right away I became very confuse thinking, can the bladder even hold that much urine.

It sure wasn't lemonade.

i am VERY skeptical of this...and concerned.

what was the situation? how long had the patient been under medical supervision? if the bladder REALLY held 2 liters then someone, somewhere failed majorly to do their job. at the point of holding 2 LITERS the patient would have had extreme discomfort and be OBVIOUSLY distended.

i guess i would have to know more to say whether or not it was "possible." if the patient came in through the ER reporting abdominal pain then i would say, "okay, yeah...it was probably because of their bladder," but if it was a patient who was already admitted who hadn't voided in X hours and was cathed......i'd call BS.

Working on a Uro floor for over twelve years this happens sometimes. Especially with enlarged prostate pts. My FIL would not see dr for 30 years and when he finally did his bladder was so stretched he put out 10,000 yes 10,000cc in a four hour period. He ended up with supra pubic tube for rest of his life.

It is possible, but not normal.

Where I work we had a resident who had such bad urinary retention for so long that upon hospitalization, the top of his bladder was even with his navel. Had him come to our facility and he was constantly pulling on his cath and ended up pulling it out of place just enough to slow the flow but not totally block (advanced Alzheimer's) and when he was re-cathed, he had 1700cc of residual. Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Afterwards he said "I don't know what y'all did but I sure feel better." Gotta love 'em!
