Is it normal to wait this long for a work permit for Canada?

Published

Hi there,

I am an internationally educated nurse just have moved to Vancouver. I have got an offer from VCH in January and then have gone to Seattle to apply for my work permit in mid January. Medical checkup was done the day after. The officer in canadian consulate general in Seattle told me that it would take 4 ~ 6 weeks for processing the permit, their website even said it would only take 28 days for the process. It's now almost mid March and I still hear nothing about my work permit. I called the CIC but they said I have to ask the consulate in Seattle, so I did what they said couple days ago and the consulate in Seattle said I needed to ask via email, but I still have no reply from them yet. I have already missed the orientation in March because I am only allowed to work with a valid permit and the next one will be in late April (another long wait). It's really frustrating especially when I do not know what is happening to my application and how much longer I need to wait for.

I would be grateful if anyone of you who has came across similar situation as mine to give me suggestions on what I can do or share your experience with me. Thank you so much for your help.

It can take a while and really all you can do is wait. Each case is different and I have know some nurses in the UK waited 6 weeks for their visa and others waiting 4-6 months. You just can't predict.

Hi Silverdragon102,

Thanks. I think what I can do now is to wait and hope~
