Is this normal

Published

Our school said that we will not learn how to start IVs. I thought all schools taught this. Instead we are just learning to see if the site is normal and how to change IV bags. They explained that they did not want to use a mechanical arm or fellow students.

Are there other schools like this?

Thank God that is not true for TN, MS, and AR. The BEST way to learn is to actually do it on a real patient. Dummy arms are nothing like the real thing.:)

It's not the case in MO either - we learn on our patients (with their permission of course).

And we've been starting IV's since our 1st semester of school.....

I am in an LPN program and we are taught how to start them and practice on manequins but we are not allowed to start them on actual patients. Where I live getting IV certified is something that you must do on your own after you have completed school. Each facility is different about how tyou get your certification. I definately want to become IV certified when I am finished with school. The hospital that I am applying to has a class that I can take (that THEY will pay for) so I can get my IV certification.
