Is moving to Florida worth the move

Published

Hi all, My boyfriend was offered a job with a trucking company and one of the areas in which they place their workers is Miami. Placement is available in several other states as well. However, he's seriously considering the miami area as the pay is more. It's unbelievable what he'll be getting paid vs. the pay cut I'll be taking if I make the move. I am currently living in NY and as a new grad working nights i'm making over $39/hr. This brings my annual income to over $76K. From what I'm seeing in Florida and most of the southern states I'll be taking a generous paycut. Not to mention that the cost of living in Miami especially is just as bad as NY. I hardly think it's worth the move. Can someone please give me some insight? any advice?

I've heard of nurses who travel from FL to NY and work 6days straight and return to FL and be off for 8 days. Is that even worth it?

Are You Planning To Live In Miami Permanently?

My Suggestion:

If Not, Why Dont You Take A Travel Assignment! Take Advantage To The Perks Like The Free Housing, Utilities And Bonuses.

Then While Your There If You Decide To Live Then You Buy A Place (if You Like Florida Living Of Course).

Keep In Mind The Extreme Heat, And Hurricanes But On The Flip Side You Have The Beautiful Beaches And The Famous South Beach To Party On Your Off Days. Good Luck On Your Decision.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Miami is not really all its portrayed as...I've been a high school teacher for 8 years, my hubby's a police detective, and we have 2 children...

If it wasn't because I am changing careers (COULD NOT DEAL WITH some of the children anymore) and my husband just getting promoted, we would move up north in a second...

research the states cost of living, crime rates, neighborhoods....etc...if your bf is a truck driver, you are going to be alone while he's on the road, and the last thing you want is to be stuck in some place you might not be happy with...

When everyone thinks of Miami, the first thing that comes to mind is South Beach, beautiful condos and balmy breezes. Here's the thing. Only the wealthy get to experience that life on a daily basis. The interior of Miami is extremely hot, muggy, mosquito infested during the summer. Summer begins around the end of April and ends in November. Then there is the dry season. It cools to a comfortable temperature and the northerly breezes come in. Miami is very diverse. It helps tremendously to be trilingual. If you are not, you may feel like you're in a foreign country. It is expensive to live there. There's a lot of good things to say about Miami but to really enjoy it, you have to have the $$.

You're probably going to loose up to $10/hour and unless your spouse is making a big pay raise, it isn't worth it.

People come to Florida for many reasons, but money usually isn't one of them. You'd be full of resentment and unhappy with the "way you do things down here" and you'll hate the heat. I've seen this over and over with New Yorkers that move down here.

Miami has a great vibe and I love it, but I wouldn't live there unless I spoke Spanish. I love visiting there, and the heat and humidity doesn't bother me as I'm a Floridian already. :)

I agree with 2BNurse...take a leave of absence from your current job and look for a travel assignment in Miami. If you have at least one yr of nursing exp., you can get an assignment in the Miami area (the travel needs go up in the winter months). It's a reasonable way to see a city and check out a hospital...only 13 wks and if you hate the area, you can go back to NY. I lived in the Doral area for 8 months working for the military...I was ready to leave...but my fiance & I did have a good time!! Good luck making your decision.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I am in agreement with everyone. I don't really want to move because of the pay cut and Miami is just as expensive if not more expensive than NY from what I have seen just from visiting. It's really not cost effective for me to make that move. At least not at this point. The weather I won't mind because I'm originally from jamaica and the weather is pretty much the same except it doesn't get cold during the "winter" months. I'm planning on pursuing nurse anesthesia so money won't be too much of an issue once I've gotten that accomplished. However, I was hoping he would wait for the move once I was done with school. This way I wouldn't mind moving elsewhere. For my bf it would be a good move as far as salary as he'd basically be making what I'm making now as an RN. Can you believe that? It's crazy. I do have family in other parts of Florida so maybe we can look into other areas. We will see. It's a tough decision. The move is good for him, but not for me.
