Is this too little?

I got hired at a psychiatric facility and they said their orientation is only 4-5 days.. Is that enough? Because I personally don't think so!

Oh wait, just went back and read whole thread.....how long was classroom orientation?

Surely if you let them know after 4-5 days you didn't quite feel ready and would like another block of orientation then they would accommodate you. Especially after the initial investment in you as a new hire has already begun.

Is it an acute psychiatric facility? I graduated last year and am working in an acute psychiatric hospital, locked emergency & inpatient facility, in my 3rd month of employment. I received 6 weeks of formal training, 2 weeks on days, 2 weeks on evenings, and 2 weeks on night shifts. To cover your liability, you may want to formally, in email writing, request for training citing you're not comfortable working alone until you receive more training. Also, I would try building rapport & trust with a veteran nurse and ask her how you can do well with so little training. If you can gain a good working relationship with an experienced staff member, they will be mostly happy to help you. Especially if you stroke their ego a bit.

If you don't feel quite comfortable, ask for more time training. It couldn't hurt to ask. Worst case they say no....best case, they give you more time and you are able to continue your dream of being a psych nurse

Better than I recieved, STRAIGHT onto the floor but that was abt 30 yrs ago (though I did have nurse beside me to ask questions of/make sure I got the right paperwork) Nothing like "Learn by doing" IMO. LOL.

It was fine though, (and it was as bad and critical as state hosp paitients). Apparently I born being a psych nurse/found my niche! LOL

WHAT aspect are you worried abt or are you new grad or ?.
