Is getting your DNP worth it?

Specialties Doctoral

Updated:   Published

So I plan on getting my masters to become a nurse practitioner. After that I was thinking of following it up and earning my DNP. Is it worth it? Do DNPs have the title "Dr." I.e. " Dr. name FNP DNP" ?? I would appreciate any tips anyone could give me on it. Thank you!

Others allow anyone who has reached that level to use the term wherever without further explanation.

Historically, for dentists and podiatrists, the entry level degree is a doctorate in a very specific field. That field of study is characterized by international homogeneity. This can't be said of entry level nor advanced practice nursing. Chiropractors and naturopaths do not have clinical privileges in any hospital I've ever heard of, so that is a false comparison. NP's (and I'm sure PA's before long) will be introducing themselves as doctor because that will be the prevailing cultural zeitgeist. But it will only be because the hospital administration says it is OK, not because it is embraced by the medical staff as a whole.

But if someone decides to do that, they place a target on themselves that they'd better be able to live with. That person will be held to the standard of a physician by physicians in all circumstances, including consults and requests for assistance. If you're not comfortable with the phrase "you're a doctor, you handle it", you'd better wait to use that title until you are.
